Chapter 48

"I can't believe this!" cried Skyler as he slammed the phone down. He'd called JC twice since he'd arrived in New York, but Justin and then Joey had told him that JC refused to talk to him. He blamed Skyler for the article in the tabloid, but Skyler knew that none of his people had said a word about them. As for the picture, it was just a hug. It was the same hug that he'd given Justin and Lance, yet there were no pictures of that in the tabloids with witty little catch-phrases.

"JC still won't talk to you?" asked Carlos as he watched Skyler pace back and forth in front of the telephone.

"No, and it's actually pissing me off more than hurting my feelings," replied Skyler. "I can't believe that he thinks I'm responsible for this!"

"The article does say that it was your spokesman who was quoted," pointed out Carlos for the third time, and Skyler resisted the urge to find a sharp knife and open his friend's veins.

"Yes, and we've questioned everyone on my staff, Carlos," he snapped. "No one said a fucking word. This was someone who worked for the hall or something."

"And JC won't talk to you and try to straighten it out," commented Carlos.

"Of course he won't," replied Skyler. "He's a paranoid ass who thinks that if we're seen in public walking down opposite sides of a street people will think we're lovers."

"Calm down, Sky," said Carlos. "He'll eventually talk to you about this when he realizes that he's being an idiot."

"But by then I'm thinking it will be too late," said Skyler, sitting down on the bed. "I'm getting so tired of this."

The two were silent for a while after that. Skyler was thinking of what to say to JC if and when he ever took his calls, and he had lyrics floating through his head that he hoped he would remember after the premiere so he could write them down. He'd come to New York to be there for Carlos. Carlos had starred in the Sky High film Love Dust. Skyler had even covered a song for it.

He'd come for Carlos, but so far all the press had wanted was a quote about the tabloid article. Justin had told him that Nsync had been getting the same treatment everywhere they went. He'd told Skyler that JC was being hounded, the calls were coming non stop and with the lawsuit in full swing, this little bit of publicity was hurting them more than helping them. Skyler had explained that the story hadn't come from his staff, and Justin had said he believed him. Still JC wouldn't budge.

By the time Carlos excused himself to go to the hotel to get ready for the premiere, Skyler was on the phone to JC again. He expected no luck and that's exactly what he got. He decided then and there that if JC didn't at least talk to him by the time he left New York, he would never speak to him again. As he dressed for the premiere that idea appealed more and more to him.

On the carpet in front of the theater, reporters called out questions about the article as Skyler posed for pictures and waived at them, saying nothing. He stopped waiving and smiling as soon as one asked where JC was. He'd been in a bad mood for the rest of the night. He was still in a bad mood when he boarded his flight back to Seattle to rejoin the show. JC still hadn't called, and Skyler's mind was made up.

* * *

"We're going to do something a little different tonight, Seattle," he called to the audience as they screamed. "I got permission from a close friend to sing a song tonight, and that's what I'm gonna do. Sing it if you know it."

The music started for Madonna's "Bye Bye Baby" and the crowd screamed louder. Skyler danced across the stage without dancers for this part of his performance. He got as close tot he edge of the stage as he could before he started to sing.

"This is not a love song," he said to the crowd and they screamed back at him. "Bye bye, baby.

"I keep on waiting, anticipating, but I can't wait forever. You say you love me, you're thinking of me, but we're never together," he sang, dancing around in front of the crowd.

"Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. That's why we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye. Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. This time we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye.

"You had your chances, all your romances, and now I just don't want you. I know I love you because I hate you, and now I'd rather haunt you. Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. That's why we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye. Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. This time we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye," he sang, and danced to the music as the audience cheered him on. He came back to the center of the stage just as his musical queue sounded.

"Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. That's why we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye. Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. This time we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye.

"You're so beautiful. What makes you feel exciting? What wakes you up inside? Does it make you feel good to see me cry? I think it does That's why it's time to say bye bye. Does it make you feel good to make me ask why? I think it does. You can forget about it, baby. It's time to say bye bye.

"Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. That's why we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye. Bye bye baby bye bye. It's your turn to cry. This time we have to say goodbye. So say goodbye.

"I don't wanna keep the bright flame of your ego going, so I'll just stop blowin' in the wind. To love you is a sin. Adios!" he screamed, and the audience roared.

"Uh, this is not a love song. I'd like to hurt you.

"What excites you? What turns you on? What makes you feel good? Does it make you feel good to see me cry? I think it does. That's why it's time to say goodbye. Bye bye.

"The first time and the last time. You can forget about it baby. Forget the rules, forget the fools. Forget your fears, forget my tears. You can forget about it baby, bye bye baby bye bye. You can forget about it baby. 'Cause it's the first time and the last time you'll ever see me cry. You fucked it up."

He stopped and stared at the crowd as the music stopped. They screamed his name and cheered as the lights went down. Once the lights had completely gone down, he left the stage. The dancers all looked at him, but none of them said anything. He didn't even talk to the twins or Jason as he made his way to his dressing room to shower and change. On the bus, he went straight to the back room and crawled into bed. They arrived in Anaheim and checked into the hotel, but he wasn't in his room for more than five minutes when the phone started to chirp. He picked it up and listened to JC's voice say three words before he hung up the phone.

He was just coming out of the bathroom an hour later when the phone chirped again. He sighed as he sat down on the bed and stared at it. He was sure it was JC again, and his mind was made up. There would be no changing it. They were finished. He couldn't put up with things like this anymore. He was too tired of it. Finally he picked up the phone, but it wasn't JC's voice that coldly greeted him.

"Skyler, this is Karen Chasez," said a woman's voice. "I'm Joshua's mother, and I want to know just what the Hell you think you're doing."

Bye Bye Baby is a song by Madonna.

The next chapter will be posted soon.
